About 4 months ago I decided to move all my data to a Network Attached Storage device. This choice allows me the freedom to access my data on any device throughout the office, home or remote location. After researching the internet I discovered a popular, cost effective, solution was a HP Microserver N54L. The next step would be choosing a operating system. I choose Windows 8 Professional. If you would like to know more about setting up a HP Microserver N54L running Windows 8 Pro please click here.

So let's get started on "How to Set Up a Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Web Server in Virtual Box".

Step 1) Download Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS or current version at http://www.ubuntu.com/download/server I recommend downloading the 64bit (LTS) Long Term Support Version.

Step 2) Download the latest version of Virtual Box at https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

Step 3) Once downloading is complete, install Virtual Box by double clicking "VirtualBox-Version-Win.exe"

Step 4) Once VirtualBox is installed, run the program and click NEW, this will bring up a pop-up screen "Create Virtual Machine". Fill in the details of your Virtual Machine. You can name anything it anything you like.

Step 5) You will then be prompted to enter a memory allocation. Depending how much memory you have available on your server will depend on what you choose. I like to use 2048MB as a minimum

Step 6) Select "Create a virtual hard drive now" & then click create

Step 7) Select "VDI VirtualBox Disk Image", Click Next

Step 8) Select "Dynamically allocated", Click Next

Step 9) Now select the OS File Size you would like. The system defaults to 8GB but you can adjust to what size you think you might need. Leave the location.
Click Create

Step 10) VirtualBox will now ask you to Select a startup disk. Simply choose the "ubuntu-12.04.3-server-amd64.iso" we downloaded earlier from Ubuntu Website at http://www.ubuntu.com/download/server. At the time of writing this tutorial the current version is 12.04.03. Click Start when you have selected you ISO.
